The part that matters most

Your calculator inputs never leave your browser. Qualification, profession, salary, city, family standing: all of it is computed on your device and none of it is transmitted, stored or logged anywhere.

What we do collect

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand how many people visit, which pages they read, and where they arrive from. It sets cookies and processes your approximate location, device and browser, and the pages you view.

Google Signals is switched on. That means where you are signed into a Google account and have Ads Personalisation enabled on that account, Google may report to us in aggregate on age range, gender and broad interest categories, and may recognise that visits from more than one of your devices belong to the same person. We see this only as grouped totals, never as a profile of you. We turned it on for one reason: this site is trying to understand who engages with dowry as a subject, and that question cannot be answered without it.

Ad personalisation is switched off. These are two separate settings and we have deliberately split them. Nothing collected here is fed into Google Ads audiences, remarketing lists, or any advertising product. This site carries no advertising and sells nothing.

Enhanced measurement is on, so Google Analytics also records some interactions automatically, without us writing code for each one: page scrolls, clicks that leave the site, site searches, video engagement, file downloads, and the fact that a form was started. We additionally record our own events, including which calculator options were chosen, how far down a page you read, and which helpline numbers get tapped. None of these carry your name, and none of them carry anything you typed.

Event data is retained for 14 months, which is the maximum a standard Google Analytics property allows, after which it ages out of the reporting interface. If we later export raw events to Google BigQuery for longer-term and research analysis, that copy would persist beyond 14 months, and this page will say so on the day we do it.

There is no login on this site, no account, and nothing that identifies you by name.

If you would rather not be measured, any of these work and the site behaves exactly the same without measurement:

If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland

Visitors in those countries are asked first. Nothing is stored and no analytics cookie is set until you choose, and if you decline, none is set at all. The choice is remembered on your own device so you are not asked again.

Everyone else, including visitors in India where most of this site's readers are, is not shown that prompt, because the consent requirement that creates it does not apply to them. To work out which country you are in we read your browser's own timezone, and only if that suggests Europe do we ask our server for the country Cloudflare already sees. No IP address is stored or shared, and for a visitor outside Europe that check never runs at all.

The contact form

If you write to us through the contact page, we receive what you type: your name, your email address if you give one, and your message. That is used to answer you and for nothing else. The form uses Google reCAPTCHA to block automated submissions, which is subject to Google's privacy policy ↗.

Server logs

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which keeps standard request logs for security and abuse prevention.

Your rights

You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be deleted, or object to analytics processing. For anything sent through the contact form we can find and delete it on request. For analytics, the data is aggregated and not linked to your identity, so there is generally nothing individual to retrieve.

Write to us through the contact page for any of this.

Because the demographic and cross-device reporting comes from your Google account rather than from us, the fastest way to switch it off everywhere is in your Google account ↗, not here.

Children

This site is not directed at children. It discusses criminal law, domestic violence and deaths, and it is written for adults.

Changes

If we change what is collected, this page changes with it, in the same update rather than afterwards. Last updated 17 August 2026.
