Terms of use
Terms of Use.
Short, and written to be read. There is no account to open, nothing to buy, and nothing here that tries to catch you out.
These terms apply to dowry.lol. By using the site you accept them. They were last updated on 17 August 2026.
1. What this site is
dowry.lol is a free public-awareness project about dowry in India, published by Azonova. It has two halves, and they follow different rules:
- The calculator is satire. Every figure it produces is invented. The multipliers are a joke with a point, not researched market rates.
- The legal pages are meant to be accurate. Section numbers, penalties, dates and case citations are checked against the India Code. Our editorial policy sets out how.
2. The calculator output is fiction
You must not rely on any number this site produces as a real, expected or acceptable dowry figure. There is no such figure. Dowry is a criminal offence in India and the only lawful amount is zero.
Do not use the output in a marriage negotiation, in a legal proceeding, in journalism, or in research as though it were data. If you quote a number from this site as real, that is a misuse of it, and we disclaim any responsibility for what follows.
3. This is not legal advice
Nothing here creates a lawyer and client relationship. The legal information is general, describes the position as we understand it at the date shown on each page, and cannot account for your circumstances. Statutes and judgments change. For anything that matters, speak to a qualified lawyer. Free legal aid is available through your District Legal Services Authority, and the helplines are here. See also the legal disclaimer.
4. Acceptable use
You may read, link to, quote and share anything on this site. You must not:
- Present the calculator's output as genuine data, or strip the context that says it is satire.
- Use the site to make, support or justify a dowry demand. That would invert the entire point of it, and the demand itself is already an offence under Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
- Attempt to disrupt the site, probe it for vulnerabilities without telling us, or scrape it in a way that degrades it for other people. Ordinary crawling is welcome, and llms.txt exists for exactly that.
- Republish the legal pages wholesale as your own work.
- Use the site in any way that breaks Indian law.
5. Using our content
We would rather be cited than protected. The statistics page, including both charts, may be reproduced by journalists, researchers, students and campaigners provided you attribute dowry.lol and name the underlying source, which is the National Crime Records Bureau. A link back is appreciated but not required.
Quoting reasonable extracts from the legal pages with attribution is fine. The dowry.lol name, the seal, and the site's design remain ours.
Statutory text itself is government material and is not ours to license. Get it from the India Code ↗.
6. External links
We link to government sites, courts, commissions and helplines because they are useful. We do not control them and are not responsible for what they publish or for whether their numbers still work. If a link here is dead or wrong, tell us and we will fix it.
7. Availability
The site is provided as it is, with no warranty that it will be available, uninterrupted, or free of errors. We may change, move or remove any page at any time. It is a free project maintained by people with other jobs.
8. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of this site, from reliance on anything published here, or from the site being unavailable. This does not limit any liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Said plainly: this is a free awareness project, not a professional service, and it should not be the only thing you rely on in a situation that matters.
9. Privacy
What is collected, and what is not, is set out in the privacy notice. The short version is that your calculator answers never leave your browser, and traffic is measured with Google Analytics.
10. Corrections and takedowns
Factual corrections are welcome and are acted on, per our editorial policy. If you believe something here infringes your rights or should be removed, write to us with the page and the reason, and we will look at it properly.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts of India have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.
12. Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the date at the top of this page changes with them. There is no mailing list to notify, because we do not have your email address.
